Once you are done with downloading NSE bhavcopy data using Getbhavcopy, follow these steps to import this data into Metastock.

Start "Metastock Downloader" and select "Tools" >> "Convert".

You will see a window similar to this

In the "Source" section, select filetype as "ASCII Text". Next click the Browse button to select the file which contains the data you need to import. For example to import the data we downloaded for 4 JAN 2007, we select the file C:\Getbhavcopy\EODdata\04JAN2007.txt.

Select bhavcopy file downloaded using Getbhavcopy

In the "Destination" section, select file type as "Metastock" (since we are converting data from ascii text format to metastock format). Click Browse and select the folder where your historical data is contained. Consolidated historical NSE data updated till 04-Oct-2007, in a zip file is avaliable from NSE_20071004.zip from Rapidshare.com.

Click the Options button to open the conversion options dialogue box. This is very important, otherwise your data will not import correctly.

The Conversion Options dialog consists of two pages: one for specifying the Source file options and the other for specifying the Destination file options.

Conversion Options source tab

Type the First date and Last date for the range of data you want to Convert (Same Date in case of Daily Update). Choose the Periodicity of the source file as Daily.

Choose Destination from the Conversion Options dialog and ensure that the settings are as follows

Conversion Options destination tab

Click OK to confim the settings.

Click Ok to start importing the data.

Wait for some time. The conversion report will then be displayed. Check for errors if any. A green check mark next to the file means that data was successfully converted and stored. A yellow triangle means that warnings exist. A red X means that errors exist.
